Harban Redwood have been involved with an innovative luxury residential project where we were asked to incorporate re-used steel into the structural design. An existing office building that was in the process of being demolished was source.
Following identification and cataloguing of the available structural member we were able to re-design our structure in accordance with the IStruct reusing structural steel design guide to include the recycled members. The members were transported from the demolition site to the fabrication yard before undergoing material testing and quality checks.
The final design included approximately 11t of recycled steel. This helped to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of the new construction. In addition, both the demolished building and the fabrication yard were near to the project which helped to reduce the amount of vehicular transport.
