Residential: Structural engineers to a traditional building
Description:
We were appointed as structural engineers for works at The Old Stables, a traditional building that had been subject to numerous extensions and alterations over time.
The existing structure was complex, with a mixture of construction types and irregular load paths resulting from historic changes to the building. This required a cautious and well-considered approach to both permanent works design and temporary stability during construction.
Our role included the assessment of the existing structure, development of structural solutions to accommodate the proposed alterations, and the design and review of temporary works to ensure the building remained stable throughout the works. This included advising on sequencing, identifying high-risk elements, and detailing propping and support arrangements.
Given the nature of the project, we worked closely with the Architect and Contractor to resolve issues as they arose on site and to agree on practical solutions in response to the condition of the existing structure.
The works were delivered safely, with the risks associated with the complex and altered building successfully managed through close collaboration and careful engineering judgement.
