Harban Redwood provided structural engineering services for this bespoke new-build home in Buckinghamshire, working alongside Roger Coy Partnership to develop structural solutions that supported the architectural vision while responding to challenging site conditions.
The Project
Designed around generous open-plan living, the new home features large internal spans, vaulted living spaces and a low-pitch prefabricated timber roof structure.
The structural design needed to create the open, light-filled spaces envisioned by the architect while carefully coordinating the structure with the form and detailing of the building.
The Challenge
The site presented several important engineering considerations from the outset.
A high water table and nearby mature trees influenced the foundation strategy, requiring careful consideration of the ground conditions to develop an appropriate solution for the new property.
Above ground, the combination of large open-plan areas, vaulted spaces and the prefabricated timber roof created further structural challenges.
The design needed to achieve the required spans while minimising the impact of the structure on the architectural layout.
Our Approach
Harban Redwood developed the structural design in close coordination with Roger Coy Partnership, considering both the below-ground conditions and the requirements of the building above.
A suitable foundation solution was developed in response to the site constraints, including the high water table and proximity of mature trees.
For the superstructure, the team designed the structural elements required to achieve the property’s large spans and open-plan spaces, while coordinating closely with the architectural design.
Particular attention was given to the low-pitch prefabricated timber roof, ensuring the supporting structure worked effectively with the vaulted spaces and overall form of the house.
The Result
The completed design brings together challenging foundation conditions and an ambitious architectural brief to create a highly bespoke new home.
Large, open and light-filled living spaces have been achieved alongside vaulted areas and a carefully coordinated timber roof structure, demonstrating how early collaboration between architect and structural engineer can help turn ambitious residential designs into practical, buildable solutions.
